SAFETY DATA SHEETS
Safety data sheets (SDS) are the main tool for ensuring that suppliers communicate enough information along the supply chain to allow safe use of their substances and mixtures.
Safety data sheets include information about the properties of the substance (or mixture), its hazards and instructions for handling, disposal and transport and also first-aid, fire-fighting and exposure control measures. This information can be found in the main body of the safety data sheet or in the annexed exposure scenarios (where applicable).
The latest Turkish SDS Regulation – Regulation on Preparation and Distribution of Safety Data Sheets regarding Dangerous Substances and Preparations is published in Official Gazette with number 29204 on 15 Dec 2014 and fully comes into force on 1 June 2016.
Key Requirements of Turkish SDS Regulation
- Standard 16-section SDSs;
- Must be prepared in Turkish and provided free of charge;
- Must be prepared by certified SDS experts in Turkey;
- A copy of SDSs shall be submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.
Critical Dates of Turkish SDS Regulation
15 Dec 2014 : The regulation comes into force;
1 June 2015 : Mandatory for hazardous substances;
1 June 2016 : Mandatory for both hazardous substances and mixtures.
Important Note: This regulation has been replaced by TURKREACH KKDIK regulation issued in June 2017. The transition period will continue to 2023.
A supplier needs to provide a safety data sheet in the following cases:
- A substance (and from 1 June 2016 a mixture) classified as hazardous according to TR-CLP (SEA).
- A mixture classified as dangerous according to the Dangerous Preparations Directive (until 1 June 2016).
- A substance that is persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) or very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB), as defined in TURKREACH (KKDIK) Annex XIII, or
- A substance is included in the candidate list of substances of very high concern.
Certain situations require the update and re-issue of the safety data sheet:
- as soon as new hazard information or information that may affect the risk management measures becomes available
- once an authorisation under TurkREACH KKDIK has been granted or refused
- once a restriction under TurkREACH KKDIK or By-Law on Restrictions has been imposed
